GROUPS ANNOUNCED

In the 21st Oct session our groups for the BTS documentaries were announced. I had already e-mailed my tutor, telling her that I thought I worked well with Momoko Hill, Isabel Ayres and Emma Dagger, because of our previous projects and friendships, we know each others strengths and weaknesses and already have a good group relationship. I also would have liked to work Joe Farr and Joshua Partridge as I had never previously had the chance to work with them and feel that we would have been able to draw from each others different strengths.
I got put into a group with Emma Dagger, Isabel Ayres and Jake Twyman. This I was pleased about, and I was excited to be working with Jake as I had never workied with him before (because of him not being in our group last year) and I know that he has various skills which could come in very handy.

COMMISSIONING AND EMPLOYMENT IN THE MEDIA - FRIDAY 21ST OCT 2011

For this session we had to have watched various BTS docs of any sort of media organisation, and analyse them. I watched 'The Lion King' (west end show), the film 'London to Brighton' and the film 'Changeling'.

As 'Changeling' is one of my favourite films, I really enjoyed watching this and listening to what she had to say. As one of my favourite aspects of the film is the 1920s-1930s fashion, this film seemed like it was very much aimed at people like myself. However, it does show a lot of the film, and almost takes on a slight trailer/spoiler feels to it, which is to make people who haven't seen the film, then want to watch it.

I was still feeling positive about the rest of the course, as we went through what other BTS people had watched and gave ourselves more inspiration and ideas of what we could do. After this we discussed potential ideas of our BTS. We came up with various ideas, what stuck in my mind and inspired me was a BTS doc of in a theatre (as I have a passion for theatre!)

COMMISSIONING AND EMPLOYMENT IN THE MEDIA - FRIDAY 14TH OCT 2011

This was our first session of the year studying the module 'Commissioning and employment in the media'. We started out by filling out a skills assessment sheet, so our tutor could see where our skills lie. I feel that my skills lie in editing/post production. Last year the assessments I enjoyed the most were the 'Montage Edit' and the 'Music Edit' both of which enabled me to just 100% focus on editing…and unsurprisingly those were the assessments I did the best in. This year I would love to be able to develop those skills further so my editing can take on a whole new level of professionalism. It would also be good to be able to develop my skills in other areas such as pre production and production so I have a more broad field of skills.

We then launched straight into talking about the first assessment: Behind the scenes documentary. We watched a behind the scenes documentary of the film called 'Hunger'. The documentary made me really want to watch the film, which I guess was the whole purpose!

The film was inspiring and touching, but also quite sad and disturbing.  I would definitely recommend it, but it's not for the light hearted. From watching the documentary we noted down what we thought the purposes of making a BTS were, I came up with:
- To promote the film
-To promote the subject
- To increase interest and understanding in the film
- To attract new audiences

We were then asked to go away and think about what we would like to create a BTS documentary on. Ideas were popping into my head (travelling to london to do a behind the scenes in the publishing sector of a women's magazine e.g Vogue, Elle etc, or even getting in on a film that may have been locally filmed) not necessarily very practical ones, but at least it was a start. I came away from the session feeling quite excited about the rest of the year.
